Guggenheim Museum

The Guggenheim Museum has magnetized tourists from all corners of the world to visit Bilbao. This distinctive museum was designed by the renowned North American architect Frank O. Gehry and was built on a 32,500 square meter site right in the center of Bilbao.

Because of its unique shape, it has been the core topic amongst locals, tourists, and architects. This colossal display of contemporary architecture stands for everything dire regarding the modern world, with no regard for the norm or typical attractiveness. It also signifies a whole lot of fearless and impetuous characteristics about modern culture. It has been said a lot of times that “different folks have different strokes,” and the point is, some may tremendously love or outrageously hate this sheer out-of-the-box structure. It will not matter anyhow, because the Guggenheim museum will be witnessed by many generations for it is going to be a lifetime symbol of Bilbao.

This museum was brought to life in 1927. This aged edifice displays life-size replicas of original sculptures in plaster. Furthermore, the artifacts in this museum range from Ancient Art (Mesopotamic and Egyptian civilisations) to Classic Art (ancient Greek, Classical, Helenic and Renaissance). The museum is well-known among artists and painters in Bilbao because many of them have been in the place for drawing, painting and modeling lessons from the renowned artist, Manu, who is also dubbed as 'El Ruso.'

Museo de Reproducciones Artísticas also includes a video library and a photographic laboratory. The audiovisual room used to have a program that can demonstrate how to sculpt using the 'grafting' method. It is closed at present for further improvements.

Amaste Gallery, from the layman’s point of view, may be regarded as a place that is rich with eccentricities, and this is still an understatement. This establishment was launched in 1995, and it probably was the talk of the town until the inauguration of the Guggenheim Museum in the late 1990’s.

It is apparent that the Amaste Gallery upholds unique expressions of contemporary art. The intriguing masterpieces that the contemporary artists come up with will truly puzzle the spectator’s minds. The artworks exhibited in this edifice range from several genres like photography, painting, sculpture and any other figure of artistic expression. Ricardo Antón Troyas is the gallery director and there is a shop specializing in artists' supplies, to be found at the gallery’s rear.

This edifice serves domicile to one of Bilbao’s creative reserves: it is where the City Puppetry Arts Centre is located. It is the endeavor of this social center to prop up the puppetry theatre scenario. The gallery also spearheads a number of services and activities related to puppetry. It has over 300 varieties of puppets in diverse styles, origins, and fashions. They also have an extraordinary collection of puppetry arts.

Casa de Cultura de Barrainkua also organizes seminars, round-table discussions, conferences, workshops on creating and developing puppets, and small theater productions. Other notable activities include the poster-making competitions for Bilbao in the Carnavals and during the Semana Grande ("Aste Nagusia") or Big Week festival.
