Hospital de Basurto Avenida de Montevideo, 18 Bilbao, 48013 Tel: +34 94 4006000

The Basurto Hospital opened in 1908, taking the place of the Hospital de Atxur whose neoclassical building was believed to be no longer functional, right after the second Carlist War.

The Basurto Hospital building, was designed by the architect Enrique Epalza . He did a hospital design that did not follow the usual form of neoclassical hierarchical organization. He merged European styles and worked with progressive styles that were ahead of the current time. Organized in blocks, the proper appearance of the bricks corresponded with modernist strokes and references to the Viennese structural design of that period in time. Each block enjoyed functional independence, and had its own unique medical area of expertise.

The attractive Basurto hospital complex was extended after many years. Additional new blocks were constructed but nevertheless maintained harmony with the old architectural lines. The original features of this legendary Bilbaoan hospital are certainly retained.
